What is a nation?
When you're new to Lund and the university, you often hear about the city's venerable nations. What a nation is, however, can be a bit unclear when you're new to Lund life. We'll help you sort out the nation jungle!
The main role of nations is social life outside of studies.
This is often through club activities, pubs, restaurants, fun activities and much more, all run on a voluntary basis by students. Many nations also offer accommodation. All these things can be found at Västgöta Nation. When you join a nation, you also become a member of Studentlund, an umbrella organisation for nations and other student unions. As a member of Studentlund, you get access to all the activities that nations and associations offer, which means: if you are a member of one nation, you can still visit all the others regardless!
Which is the best nation in Lund? Västgöta Nation of course!
We know that we are a bit biased when it comes to this question. Which nation suits you best depends, of course, a bit on your interests and what you value in a social context. Västgöta is a big nation that 'feels small' when it comes to our amazing community. VG is like a second home where many find friends for life. We enjoy trying new things, running projects, letting our creativity flow and organising unforgettable events. We've also long been known for our incredible cooking and serving skills!
For many years, lots of international students have chosen to be members at VG. Why? Probably because you get to experience the Swedish culture and get to know Swedish people in an inclusive, welcoming environment and people that love to learn about other cultures as well. Some nations tend to target Swedish students more and some other nations are almost only made up of international students. VG welcome all people and celebrate our differences - that’s what makes our community so great!

So what about the Novice period?
The Novice period at Västgöta Nation are filled with sittings, sports activities, novice parties and lots of other fun. As a Novice, you will be placed in a group with supporting mentors so that you can get to know a bunch of lovely people. You choose which of the activities you want to join! It can be one, several or all of them!
We will explore Lund together with exciting quests, grand sittings, pub quizzes, brunch and cosy moments in Lund’s lovely parks or at the nation. Together we will end the Novice period with the biggest event: The Novice Party! As a Novice in Lund, it’s nice to know stuff like what really distinguishes a sitting from a ball, or a “finsittning” from a “fulsittning”. Feel free to ask us anything about the student life in Lund!
